little quilt monday~~~finished baby quilts

Little Quilt Monday

I finished two more baby quilts to take to South Africa in late July.
I ended up finishing them without a binding.

Click on the picture for a closer look.

I finally decided if I was going to have them ready in time,
that the no binding technique would not only be faster, but also an appropriate method for a baby quilt.

The black and white baby quilt is 29 X 40 inches
and the star baby quilt is 29 X 36 inches.

I have 3 baby quilts finished for my trip to Africa, and a few more ready to be machine quilted.
As much as I enjoy hand stitched binding, I think that this will be
a quicker and more practical way to finish these baby quilts.

What do you think about quilts without binding?

Now it is your turn to link up something to

Little Quilt Monday

1.  This link-up party is for any small project.  For example, mini quilts, doll quilts, baby quilts, place mats, mug rugs, purses,
wall quilts, table runners, etc.

2.  They can be a WIP(work-in-progress) or finished.

3.  If it is something from the past there is no need to write a new blog post, just link the one that you have already written, and please link back to my blog post.
 I have added
the code to my button if you would like to add that to your blog.

4.   If you are interested, you can add your pictures to my flickr group here, or join my Facebook group here.

finished union jack mini

I finished my Union Jack mini quilt while I was in Colorado.
It is going to be a fun little reminder of the Queen's Diamond
Jubilee and the 2012 Summer Olympics in London.

I used red crochet thread for my hand stitching.
(Click on the pictures for a closer look.)

The quilt measurements are 22 X 26 inches.  I plan to make another one
and when I do I will give a little tutorial of my process, because I know
I am not the only one that didn't want a paper pieced union jack!

I am loving this one : )

little quilt monday~~~union jack

Little Quilt Monday

I decided to make a Union Jack mini quilt in honor of Queen Elizabeth's Diamond Jubilee and the summer Olympics being held in London later this summer.

I am a little late to the Union Jack party.  One reason is because all the patterns that I found were for
paper-piecing.   I am not fond of paper piecing, so I decided to make one my own way : )

I used some fabric from my stash,  the florals are from Piece of Cake,
and I am not sure about the blue dot.

Now that I know how to make my Union Jack, I am going to make another
with some of my Kaffe Fassett stash.   Who knows, I may even use
some of my Liberty of London fabric stash.....although, there isn't much left : (
I will take pictures of my process when I make the next one.

The Union Jack is ready for some hand stitching.  I plan to use red crochet thread for the stitches
and hopefully, this mini quilt will be finished by Friday!

show off friday~~~liberty tea

Show Off Friday

I have had this little table topper, patiently waiting for some hand stitching.  I finally decided that the hand stitches were not going to show up, and I gave in and machine quilted it.  I am happy that it is finished!

My stash of liberty fabric was perfect to showcase the vintage embroidery linen tea set.

I have a couple of these patterns on my tutorial page, but I have forgotten how to make a PDF file... so I guess I need to figure out how to add the other two : )

I am enjoying machine quilting with my walking foot.

My binding is white linen, and the table topper measures 25.5 X 25.5 inches.

Now it is your turn to link up something~~~~ what do you have for

Show Off Friday

There are no rules for this link up party....this is just the place to show off projects you are working on!

one down~~~? to go

I finished the first baby quilt for my African trip this summer!  I first showed you the quilt top here.  The temperatures were cool yesterday, so even without the air conditioning, I was able to spend some time sewing upstairs.
(Air conditioner should be fixed today : )

I machine quilted this baby quilt with my walking foot.  The straight line stitching just followed the lines of the bricks/coins.  Easy, and the perfect choice for this quilt.

The binding is a little pink rose fabric, and the backing is a yellow dot fabric.

This baby quilt measures 31 X 38 inches.  Don't you just love the crinkly look of a quilt after it has been washed?

I look forward to filling my suitcase with these cuties, and then giving them to some precious babies!
I have one more quilt top like this to machine quilt and then I need to make more.  I don't plan to make them all this same design, so who knows what the next few quilts will look like.  I do like the size of this one, so I will probably try to keep them all about this size.

wip~~~baby quilts

My family's life is getting ready to be in a whirlwind of excitement.  My son is moving in the next few weeks, and my daughter graduates in May, gets married in July, and that means parties in June!  After the wedding, my husband and I will be going to South Africa to spend some time working in some villages with one of our friend's foundations, and we
will also be visiting a game reserve : )

I am making baby quilts to take to the villages.  I don't have a specific number in mind so there is no pressure.  I think they will be easy to carry on, or I can take them in a suitcase and instead of returning with an empty suitcase, I can bring home some South African goodies!  Either way, I hope my baby quilts will bring joy to a few moms while I am there.

I have several ready to machine quilt.  Yes, I do love to hand stitch but I am so slow, I think it is best to machine quilt these baby quilts.  I can always add a little hand stitching later.

These two little quilts are simply rectangle coins or bricks.  I love the scrappy look.

I have to make a trip to my LQS for some 505 basting spray.  I wonder what else I will find while I am there.....

little quilt monday~~~amish stitching

Little Quilt Monday

I have been hand stitching a little quilt top that I have had in my WIP pile for a while.  I love the Amish design with the bright, bold solid fabrics.  I chose a turquoise crochet thread for the big stitches.

It is about 28 X 28 inches.  It will make a nice wall hanging or table topper.

I hope to have it finished by the end of the week : )

I finished my BINGO card for the May For Me game that I first mentioned here.

Tiger helped me with the photo shoot this morning, and of course, his favorite space on the board is the cat....oh, maybe, the bird : )

There are still a few days left if you want to link up a B I N G O card and
play along here.

Here's my card with a list of the spaces.

B    I   N   G   O
Row 1~~~horse      bunny     cat     flower    tree
Row 2~~~car          bee     strawberry     grape      deer

alzheimer's art quilt initiative

I am going to start donating mini quilts to the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative.   The AAQI is very dear to my heart because I have a family member that is dealing with this disease right now.   The donated quilts need to be no larger than 9 X 12 inches, so I am going to start making some of my
 minis to fit that requirement.

Two minis that already fit that size are my Wonky Hexagon and Faux Piped Binding mini quilt.
These will be my first donated quilts.

I would love to know if any of you donate to the AAQI
and/or if you would like to join me by either making a quilt
or purchasing one!
