charms on point process tutorial

I bought my first Cotton and Steel fabric from my local quilt shop.
I have really enjoyed working with these colors.

I pulled 30 of the 10 inch squares and cut four 5 inch charms from each.
I sewed them together in rows of 10, keeping the placement of the squares
consistent each time.  I am calling this a "controlled scrappy" quilt : )

cotton and steel charms

I decided to use the technique "turning charms on point" that I like to use so often.
Here are some process photos showing you how I go through the process of "turning charms on point."

Make the first cut from the corner and keep it straight!

Now the bottom will be sewn to the top.

Next cut the bottom as straight as you can : )

Now sew the diagonal together.

And there you have it…you have turned the charms on point!

I have the feeling there will be more controlled scrappy quilts in my future,
 I really like the look!

liberty of london charms on point

I turned my LOL 2.5 inch squares on point and I added
some osnaburg cotton on the sides.  Now I am big stitching blue circles.
Not sure what this will be when I finish…maybe a zipper pouch
or a journal cover : )

I used the turning charms on point technique that I have done before….

around the world blog hop

Today is my turn to join the Around The World Blog Hop.
I was invited to participate by my friend Amanda from The Cozy Pumpkin.
We are both members of the OKCMQG and I hope you will check out
Amanda's blog, as well as the OKCMQG blog.

Now here goes….

What am I working on?

I have joined an Instagram swap called Liberty of London Round 1,  because
I am a big fan of LOL fabric.  I visited Liberty years ago on a family trip
to London and that is when my love for LOL fabric began : )  My husband brought
home some fabric from a recent business trip to London, and I am very excited to make
something with my growing fabric stash for this swap!

Until I receive the information about my swap partner, I thought I'd make
a little project with my LOL stash using the technique I call
"turning charms on point".  It is my most popular post and also one of my
first posts : ).  You will find the original blog post here.

These 2.5 inch LOL squares are waiting to be turned on point!  I will
blog more about this project later this week.

If you are interested, here are a few posts that contain
projects using the turning charms on point technique:

How does my work differ from others of its genre?

I think this is a difficult question because I am not unique.  One thing that I
do like to add to most of my quilts is big stitch quilting.  I sometimes machine
quilt my quilts, but I really like the look a big stitch gives to a quilt.

Why do I write/create what I do?

I enjoy making things…I am a maker!
I absolutely love color.  My grandmother taught me to sew
when I was a girl and I have always loved to make things.  It is very satisfying
to finish a quilt but I also love to garden, and I dabble in weaving and knitting.
I want to learn to crochet.  I think creating things is just good for the soul, it is who I am.

How does my writing/creating process work?

I rarely follow a pattern when making my quilts.  I like to buy patterns and I
look at other quilts for inspiration, but I don't like to duplicate someone else's work.
I usually get an idea, draw it out on paper, and pull my fabrics….a pretty simple process!
As I mentioned before, I love color and enjoy trying new things and getting out of my comfort zone.
I have made many mini quilts over the years so that I could try a new technique.
I find solid fabrics to be very inspiring, and I am using them more and more in my projects.

I have asked Cindy from Live a Colorful Life blog to join the
Around the World Blog Hop next Monday, September 22.  I have followed Cindy's blog
for years, and her way with using solids has been a constant inspiration for me.
I bought a darling selvedge pincushion from her
several years ago and there is a picture of it here.
Please check out Cindy's post on the 22nd and be sure to take some time to
look around her blog and enjoy!

I also asked Mary from Molly Flanders Makerie.  She has already been asked to join the
hop, so please check out her post on the 22nd too.  Mary is one of the people
that has inspired me in my big stitch quilting.  She calls it pick stitching : )
When I first started my big stitches, I emailed Mary about how to hide my knots.
She gave me great instruction and encouragement : )

Jacey from Jaceycraft blogs about knitting, sewing and cooking.
I also enjoy following her on Instagram because I love her cat pictures as well as her
crafty endeavors.  She inspires me with all the different projects that she is able
to accomplish…oh, how I wish I could knit like she does.
And like Mary, Jacey has already been asked to join the hop, so please check
out her post on the 22nd, as well as the others!  You will be glad that you did : )

Thanks for stopping by….

little quilt monday~~~journal cover

Little Quilt Monday

It has been a long time since I have had a post for LQM.
BUT I plan to start posting more often and today I have a couple
journal covers that I made using
my favorite "charms on point technique".

I used some 2.5 inch mini charm packs for this project.   The one above is
Modern Bliss by Andie Hanna for Robert Kaufman fabrics.

The one below is Posy by Aneela Hoey for Moda fabrics.

Below you will see some pics to show a little bit of the process
that I use when making the charms on point design.

I added a solid fabric to finish the journal covers and I am pleased with how they
turned out so I have decided
that I will make this my go-to pattern for journal covers ; )

Now it is your turn to link up something to

Little Quilt Monday

1.  This link-up party is for any small project.  For example, mini quilts, doll quilts, baby quilts, place mats, mug rugs,
wall quilts, table runners, etc.

2.  They can be a WIP(work-in-progress) or finished.

3.  If it is something from the past there is no need to write a new blog post, just link the one that you have already written, and, please link back to my blog post.

4.   If you are interested, you can add your pictures to my flickr group here, or join my Facebook group here.

Let's inspire each other!

finally finished

I have been working on this quilt for a while.  I finally got motivated when I decided to give a comfort quilt to a friend that is going through chemo.  It is made with some of my favorite fabrics, and I enjoyed hand stitching a larger quilt for a change.

These fabrics are from my stash, the original Amy Butler's Gypsy Caravan collection.  I don't think I am going to buy any from her new release, but I still think they are pretty!

This sweet friend is someone that I have known since grade school, but we didn't reconnect after high school graduation until a few years ago when we became Facebook friends : )  I have enjoyed the chance to reacquaint myself with lots of old friends from the past.  I am definitely a fan of Facebook.

I hand stitched this comfort quilt with lavender crochet thread, and backed it with some
 Kaffe Fassett fabric.

The quilt measurements are 42 X 62 inches.  Just right for a lap quilt.

I am sending prayers, hugs, and love along with this quilt.

Amanda mentioned that she will not be doing the Finish It Up link party for a while, so if there is an interest I have a link account that I would be happy to use on Friday.  Let me know if I should continue the party.  I will call it something like Friday's Finishes, if there is an interest : )
edited on May 4th~~~I am calling it Show Off Friday and I hope to see you there!

little quilt monday~~~charms on point table runner

Little Quilt Monday

I have used my charms on point technique many times for larger quilts, but this time I decided to make a table runner.   I used 25  five inch charm squares from a charm pack of A Stitch in Color by Malka Dubrawsky for Moda.  The backing fabric is osnaburg cotton that gives the look of linen.

I used bright yellow and olive green crochet threads for the hand stitching.  I stitched the yellow going one direction and the green going the other direction making a crosshatch design.

The striped binding is from the same Moda fabric collection as the charm squares.  The table runner measurements are 15.5 X 30.5 inches.   Its fun to see how these turn out...this one started as a square...5 rows up and 5 rows down and then I used my technique to turn them on point.

Now it is your turn to link up something to

wip~~~table runners

I have two table runners in the works.  One is an improv project from my curves class with Rachel at Stitched in Color, and the other is using my turning charms on point method.

The runner from Curves Camp is made with two charm packs of Kona.  I still have plenty of strips left over for another project.  The colors are very bright and cheery.  Rachel calls this project Rainbow Road.  The improv curves have turned out to be lots of fun, but it is a bit scary to make that first curvy cut : )

Click on the pictures for a better view.

The other table runner is made from a charm pack of  A Stitch in Color by Malka Dubrawsky for Moda.
I am using my method of turning charms on point.   It is also a very bright, happy project.   I am ready for Spring!

I haven't decided if I am going to add a border to either one of these, or just sandwich, hand stitch and bind.  These will be perfect to use when Spring and Summer arrive, so I better get them finished soon.
