quick gifts

I made a few gifts this week. Both projects were fast and easy!

First up…..some flax seed eye pillows….very relaxing when heated in the microwave.

Next I made some hand warmers filled with rice….also heated in the microwave!

Both of these projects are a great way to use some of your favorite scraps : )

hexagon coasters

This week-end I made some hexagon coasters like the tutorial I first showed you here.

The weather was cold and I decided to pull out my bag of finished hexagons.

I sewed twelve hexagons into pairs.

Then I decided to use the blue essex linen that I had in my stash.

I sewed them to the linen using a variegated thread with a big stitch.

I am so happy with them…they will make a great gift!

Do you have any easy to make gifts to tell me about?
I would love to hear about them : )

hexagon pincushion tutorial

I made a hexagon pincushion for my Liberty of London swap partner.

Here is the tutorial/process for making this pincushion!

Begin with a 2.5 inch hexagon and sew 1.5 inch strips of fabric around
the hexagon, log cabin style.   Repeat this one more time with your printed fabric.

liberty of london pincushion

The last round will be with a solid 2 inch strip.

Now cut a backing and batting piece the same size as your finished hexagon above.
(I added batting because the Liberty of London tana lawn fabric
is thinner than regular quilting cotton)

Then I added some big stitches for added interest and to secure the batting.
All that is left to do is place the backing fabric right sides together with the top, and
sew around, leaving an opening.  I fill my pincushions with crushed walnut shells.
Finally, sew up the opening with a slip stitch.  TADA!

I hope you will make a few of these as gifts….it's that time of year, you know!

liberty of london coasters

I am making some coasters for my swap partner in the Liberty of London swap.
I thought it would be fun to show you the process/tutorial for these coasters.
Here goes:

Start with two  2 inch hexagons and sew them together using a slip stitch.

Remove the hexagon papers(I save them to use again) and secure the hexagons
to the 5.5"X5.5" piece of fabric(I used osnaburg cotton)
with washable glue or pins.

Machine or hand stitch the hexagons to the fabric square.

Cut a 5.5"X5.5" piece from thin batting and place on wrong side of the hexagon square.

Place the backing fabric right sides together and sew around the square,
leaving a small opening for turning.

Be sure to clip the corners before turning.

Turn, shape and iron your square preparing for stitching around the edges.

Stitch close to edge, starting with the opening side.

Iron flat and admire : )

I plan to make more hexagon coasters!  Please let me know if you do…they
are so easy to make and are a great little gift!

a little pincushion distraction

Sometimes while I am working on a big project(like finishing my quilt entry for the OKCMQG show in October), I like to take a break with quick project.

Making a pincushion usually works for me : )

This was lots of fun to make, and I gave it to a friend in my guild!

show off friday~~~yoga mat bag

amy butler pattern

Show Off Friday
I made a yoga mat bag using a free Amy Butler pattern

I made it with her Soul Blossoms Trailing Orchid Home decor
fabric for Rowan by Westminster Fibers.

Although you can't easily see the lining, I'll tell you what I used : )
It is a regular quilting cotton called Mini Mikes by Michael Miller fabrics
in a bright green.

The pattern was so easy to follow and I think it will be very handy
to use.  I like the pockets on the outside and the wide strap.

Now it is your turn to link up something~~~~what do you have for

little quilt monday~~~lined drawstring bag

Little Quilt Monday

I needed a gift bag for a friend's birthday present.  After seeing so many bags
made from Jeni's tutorial, I decided to make one too.

http://www.incolororder.com/2011/10/lined-drawstring-bag-tutorial.html

Her tutorial was easy to follow and I think it turned out really cute.
You need to pick out three fabrics...two for the outside and one for the inside
and then you can use ribbon or fabric to make the drawstring.

You box the corners, giving your bag a nice neat look : )

show off friday~~~ finished lingerie bags

Show Off Friday
Whew!  After all the planning, it is finally time for the wedding : )
I wanted to show the finished lingerie bags and then I have got to run!

They measure 10 X 15 inches.  The pattern is my original, but it is
nothing special.  I do think they will be practical.  I made two compartments
so the lingerie can be separated however the girls wish.   I imagine they
will come in handy when the girls travel.

The outside is linen, and the inside is polyester satin.

Well, like I said , I better go....I need to get some sleep before the festivities begin tomorrow!
We have pedicures planned, and then the rehearsal dinner in the evening......fun stuff.
Oh, I am excited.

show off friday~~~embroidery

Show Off Friday
I have been busy getting things ready for my daughter's wedding next week!  There are still a few
gifts to make, and lots of last minute details.  I am embroidering these cute corsets on some lingerie bags that I am making for the bridal party.  When I saw this corset pattern on
Pinterest, I knew it was exactly the design that I should use.

I didn't use all the pattern details on these, but I still think they are going to
end up being pretty cute : )
