finished WIP

I have had this table runner/ work-in-progress for a long time.
All it needed was to be machine quilted, so I decided to practice
my straight line quilting on this project.

It is always good to finish a project…especially one that has
been hanging around awhile!

no sew burlap table runner

I decided to make a table runner for my Thanksgiving table.  I bought 3 yards
of burlap at my local quilt shop.  I had purchased burlap once before at a place
that will remain nameless, and it smelled so bad that I threw it away!
Thankfully, this burlap was ready to use : )

All I had to do was pull a thread to divide the yardage in thirds and then I continued
pulling threads until I had about 1/2 to 3/4 inch and I cut it lengthwise as straight as possible.

After I was happy with the sides, I straightened the ends and pulled these threads a
little longer than the sides(my preference).

The burlap will look perfect on my Thanksgiving table.

I ended up with 3 table runners, so I will be able to give two away!

To help control the fray, it is a good idea to use the zigzag stitch around the table runner!
My guild friend, Jamie of Designs by Jamie, helped me get started on making this easy project.

These table runners were so much fun to make!  I know that I could embellish them
with paint or add fabric binding, however, I am happy with the
simplicity of the burlap and pulled threads : )

little quilt monday~~~rainbow trail table runner

Little Quilt Monday

I finished my Rainbow Trail table runner!  It was one of my improv curve projects for Curves Camp.

I am very happy with the vivid colors.  I used charms from Kona classic and Kona dark.   The hand stitching was done with variegated crochet thread.

Click on the pictures for a closer view.

The backing is cotton osnaburg(I love how it looks like linen) and the binding is Wordplay by Michele O Amore by Bernatex.

The table runner measurements are 13 X 31 inches.

Now it is your turn to link up something to

Little Quilt Monday

1.  This link-up party is for any small project.  For example, mini quilts, doll quilts, baby quilts, place mats, mug rugs,
wall quilts, table runners, etc.

2.  They can be a WIP(work-in-progress) or finished.

3.  If it is something from the past there is no need to write a new blog post, just link the one that you have already written, and, please link back to my blog post.

4.   If you are interested, you can add your pictures to my flickr group here, or join my Facebook group here.

little quilt monday~~~guild swap challenge

Little Quilt Monday

I have joined the OKC Modern Quilt Guild.  At the last meeting we traded ziplock bags of fabric scraps to use to make a project for the owner of the scraps.  I decided to make several small things with my partner's pretty pink, green and brown fabric scraps.  I started with the Drunkard's Path quilt block to make another potholder like I did here.

I also made a little pincushion filled with crushed walnut shells.

The last project was a table runner using my charms on point technique.

I added solid fabric squares and the owl fabric from my stash.  I was so happy that her bag included the colorful striped fabric.  I love using striped fabric for binding.  I hand stitched with pink and green crochet thread.

I decided on projects that I was comfortable making for this swap challenge.   I think they turned out pretty cute, and it was fun playing with someone else's fabric : )

wip~~~hand stitching rainbow trail

I have almost finished hand stitching my table runner called Rainbow Trail.  It is one of the projects from Curves Camp(Rachel called this project Rainbow Road).  I don't usually name my quilts, do you?  I guess I am not very creative when it comes to giving my quilts names : )

I am using variegated crochet thread with my hand stitching.

It is coming along and I am almost finished.  Now to decide what fabric to use for my binding.

It is so colorful!  I wish I was good at naming quilts....maybe I will start giving them names of songs from my youth.

little quilt monday~~~charms on point table runner

Little Quilt Monday

I have used my charms on point technique many times for larger quilts, but this time I decided to make a table runner.   I used 25  five inch charm squares from a charm pack of A Stitch in Color by Malka Dubrawsky for Moda.  The backing fabric is osnaburg cotton that gives the look of linen.

I used bright yellow and olive green crochet threads for the hand stitching.  I stitched the yellow going one direction and the green going the other direction making a crosshatch design.

The striped binding is from the same Moda fabric collection as the charm squares.  The table runner measurements are 15.5 X 30.5 inches.   Its fun to see how these turn out...this one started as a square...5 rows up and 5 rows down and then I used my technique to turn them on point.

wip~~~table runners

I have two table runners in the works.  One is an improv project from my curves class with Rachel at Stitched in Color, and the other is using my turning charms on point method.

The runner from Curves Camp is made with two charm packs of Kona.  I still have plenty of strips left over for another project.  The colors are very bright and cheery.  Rachel calls this project Rainbow Road.  The improv curves have turned out to be lots of fun, but it is a bit scary to make that first curvy cut : )

Click on the pictures for a better view.

The other table runner is made from a charm pack of  A Stitch in Color by Malka Dubrawsky for Moda.
I am using my method of turning charms on point.   It is also a very bright, happy project.   I am ready for Spring!

I haven't decided if I am going to add a border to either one of these, or just sandwich, hand stitch and bind.  These will be perfect to use when Spring and Summer arrive, so I better get them finished soon.

recycle and winners

I like to recycle things, do you?  I have shown you my pot scrubbers from plastic onion/orange bags before and here are a couple I made today:

I have a burlap bag that had pinto beans inside.  Of course, I couldn't throw it away and as popular as burlap pillows are these days, that just doesn't interest me.  Do you have any suggestions on what I can do with this 17" X 27" piece of burlap?  We often entertain outside(except in this exceptionally hot weather) and I was thinking maybe a table topper or runner.

I have randomly picked the winners for my blog anniversary giveaway:

Summer House charm pack goes to JanetK:

christmas table runner

I am beginning to make a few things with my Christmas fabric stash.  The only new Christmas fabric I have purchased this year can be found here.   I haven't decided what to make with Aneela's darling holiday fabric, but I will show you as soon as I decide.

The  Christmas table runner was made from my stash(Thimbleberries), and I plan to make a few more table runners because they are so easy and fast.  I cut a 12 1/2 inch by 4 inch rectangle out of nine fabrics and in the photo you can see that I repeated some of the same fabrics to make mine symmetrical.  (Have I mentioned that I have an accounting degree and that I have always kind of liked math : )  The border is cut  1 1/2 inches and I sew using a seam allowance of 1/4 inch.  After adding binding the table runner finished at 15 inches x 36 inches.  You can easily make yours longer by adding a few more rectangles.

As you will see, I haven't learned my lesson yet, and I used green thread on the backing.  I am not pleased with the result, and I hope I remember next time to put a different thread in the bobbin : )  I could also use a darker fabric next time for my backing.  I machine quilted with straight line quilting and I think it was the right choice for this table runner.

I will have a few more Christmas projects to show you during the holidays!
