vintage quilt thursday~~~bow tie quilt

Vintage Quilt Thursday
Vintage~~~Characterized by excellence, maturity, and enduring appeal; classic.

This vintage bow tie quilt is in wonderful condition.  It has been hand quilted in a beautiful crosshatch on the bow ties and a pretty circular feather motif on the solid melon squares.

I used my new book to help me date the fabrics.  I believe these fabrics were from 1910-1935.
The bow tie quilt block was first made around 1898, so it would have been a common pattern by 1910.

The blocks were hand pieced.  I love how they placed one of the blocks in a different direction.

This quilt has very few feminine fabrics, making it a perfect quilt for a guy!

By the looks of this quilt, I don't think it was ever used.  Oh, how I wish it had a label.
I wouldn't be surprised if the blocks weren't made and forgotten, and someone found them and put them together with the melon squares years later.

Well, now it is your turn to show us something vintage....there hasn't been much interest, so I will probably not have the link up party after today.  That is fine, I will still research and document my vintage quilts.....I'm having fun : )  I am also going to make a few bow tie blocks and I will show them tomorrow.

vintage quilt thursday~~~dating fabric

Vintage Quilt Thursday

I am so happy that my dating fabric book arrived!  I haven't had time to use it yet, so hopefully by next week I will have a chance to research one of my vintage quilts.

It is going to be easy to use, and thumbing through it, I have already seen some fabrics that look familiar.

As I said when I began this Thursday link up,  I am doing this as a learning experience for me.  I want to research the patterns and fabrics of my vintage quilts.  I wish they had labels, but since they don't, I will try to figure out their age and at the same time, learn something new!

vintage quilt thursday~~~beaded pincushion

Vintage Quilt Thursday

I have ordered a book to help me date the fabrics of my vintage quilts that I hope to have by next week.  Until then, I thought I'd show you a beautiful vintage pincushion that I bought at an antique store.  It isn't in perfect condition, but it is still very pretty.  The beads on the top are so tiny, and the little chains hanging from the sides are sort of quirky and fun.

The pincushion measurements are 6" X 2.5".
Click on the pictures for a closer look.

The center is missing some beads and, perhaps, that is where the pins were usually stuck!  I hope to someday find a pretty pin or two to put in the center.  However, it is still so lovely : )  The sun came out later in the day, so I took another picture to show the beads and chains sparkle.

vintage quilt thursday~~~trapunto lingerie bag

Vintage Quilt Thursday

I have a lovely, vintage lingerie bag that belonged to my grandmother.  Lingerie bags were popular when the women wore nylon stockings and wanted to protect them from snags.  I wish you could feel the softness of the satin.   I am taking a guess that this is a product of the 1940's.

The trapunto quilting design is wonderful and the shadow work(dark stuffing) makes it stand out so well.
It measures 14.5 X 7 inches when open.  The outside is light pink satin and the piping is light gray satin.

The inside is ivory satin with a rose and leaf motif, so lovely.
Click on the picture to get a closer look.

Here you can see the pocket for protecting nylons from snags, or whatever you
 might want...perhaps a handkerchief or a love letter : )

This vintage piece is a special treasure.  I don't know who made it, but I know who owned it!
I haven't ever tried trapunto quilting, have you?

The winner of my Leap Day giveaway is Robin.

1st edition-vintage quilt thursday~~~sunbonnet sue and sam

Vintage Quilt Thursday

I must be honest, I am not a big fan of Sunbonnet Sue quilts.   They are cute, and playful,  but this quilt block is not one that I care to try, at least not right now.   I do, however, have a charming, vintage quilt that my MIL gave me that I want to show you today.  I am happy to have this cutie, and I appreciate the quilt maker.  It is obvious someone spent many hours making this quilt, using many tiny stitches.  I wonder who it was made for?  It is in wonderful shape, but you can tell it has been used and loved : )

Each hat/bonnet has some extra embroidery stitches.  My guess is that this quilt was made in the 1940's.

Click on the pictures for a close up look.

The fabric is a mixture of feed sacks and, I am guessing, repurposed clothing and dresses.  This quilt was hand quilted in a zig zag pattern, and the appliqué is needle turned.  The measurements are 63 X 78 inches.  The binding was made by turning the muslin backing toward the front.   It would look fantastic on a twin bed because half(10) the Sues and Sams are facing one direction and half(10) are facing the other direction.

I hope you enjoyed seeing my Sunbonnet Sue/Sam quilt from the past.
