show off friday~~~shoo fly mini

Show Off Friday
I had some 3.5 inch Shoo Fly quilt blocks in my UFO pile that I decided would make
 a cute little mini quilt.
As you can tell by the fabric, they were made in the 90's.  I added two rows
of sashing and now it is ready for some hand stitching.

It is about 9.5 X 9.5 inches and will be just the right size to send
to the Alzheimer's Art Quilt Initiative.  It's country look once again
reminds me of my step-father, the farmer : )

I have also started my hand stitching on the PP mini quilt.

Now it is your turn to link up something~~~~ what do you have for

Show Off Friday

There are no rules for this link up party....this is just the place to show off projects you are working on!

little quilt monday~~~hole in the barn door

Little Quilt Monday

I decided to make mini quilts for the AAQI, and I showed you the first two that I will be donating here.  Well, since then, my step-father, who had alzheimers has died.  I was going to make these in his honor, but now I will be making them to honor his memory.

He was a farmer/rancher that loved living in the country.  I chose to make the Hole in the Barn Door quilt block in green to signify  the green color of the winter wheat that he would plant each year.  He lived a very disciplined life.  He always had breakfast at 6:30, and lunch at a diner called Vivian's.  Supper depended on the time of year, sometimes brought out into the field during harvest.  He was born on the farm, and lived in that very house until after my mothers death, when he could no longer be cared for there.  He took an active part in his community and church.  Most important of all, he loved my mother, and became part of my life when I was in college.

I hand stitched this mini quilt with variegated crochet thread.  It is a random pattern going around the square,  and it reminds me of rows of crops.

The measurements are 9 X 9 inches and the backing fabric is linen.  I added corner squares, as requested by the AAQI, for ease in hanging on the wall, if desired.

I hope to get my 3 quilts registered to the AAQI and sent by the end of the week.

Now it is your turn to link up something to

Little Quilt Monday

poetica

I entered my tea towel in the Farmers Wife for Your Life contest over at Sunni's blog and I won one of the prizes!   This week I received my two FQ bundles of Poetica by Pat Bravo for Art Gallery Fabrics from the Fat Quarter Shop.  One bundle is called Rose Ballad and the other is Seafoam Symphony.

The fabric is gorgeous and has a wonderful, soft feel.
Click on the pictures for a closer look!

I am one lucky girl!  I haven't decided what to make with all these lovelies, but it certainly will be fun playing with them.

Count them, twenty yummy fat quarters : )

farmer's wife in your life tea towel

Friendship Star

I have made several quilt blocks from the book
The Farmer's Wife Sampler Quilt by Laurie Aaron Hird.

My sweet mother was a farmer's wife in Oklahoma.  Laurie's book is full of wonderful letters from farmer's wives telling their story about life on the farm, along with wonderful quilt blocks to make a Farmer's Wife Sampler quilt.

I am using Summer House by Lily Ashbury for Moda to make my blocks.

I decided to use one of my quilt blocks to decorate a simple tea towel for

Click on the pictures for a closer view.

First I ironed the quarter inch seam allowance around the quilt block.
Then I machine stitched the block to the tea towel using some green thread.
I added hand stitching in bright green and blue crochet thread, and some white lace.

The Friendship Star is one of the first quilt blocks that I learned to make years ago.
I have more tea towels to play with, don't you think these would make cute gifts!

another farmer's wife quilt block

I made another quilt block for the Farmer's Wife quilt-along and decided not to remake the other block after a few comments telling me that they liked the block as it was!  The bright pink geranium  is from my front porch.  It is one of the flowers that my mother, a farmer's wife, would choose each year to plant in her flower pots.  She was also fond of purple petunias : )  This picture is a bit blurry because it is so windy....I will get a better picture on a calmer day.

Now here is my second quilt block:

Now I only have 109 quilt blocks to go.......

lunch date

Sunday is my day to take/fix lunch for my step-father, James.  He lives on a farm, and is showing beginning stages of Alzheimer's so we(my brother, sister, and me) are becoming caregivers for him.  So, I am off to the farm for a bit.  My husband is going with me, so maybe when we get back I will start something fun....I am thinking about making the iPad sleeve from Quilt Dad's tutorial on Moda Bake Shop!  A great project for my new journey here in blogland  : )
