rose bud hexagon

I plan to make a rose star block using the tutorial found here.  There are already so many darling ones showing up on flickr and different quilting blogs.  I started out with my hexagon of either 2 1/4 inches or 2 1/2 inches....which is correct?

Then I drew the lines on my hexagons for the rose star pattern.

I cut them apart and started my English paper piecing  and decided that some of the pieces were entirely too small for me to fiddle with, so that is when I decided to make rose buds instead : )

I am using my heather ross fabric for these and I think I am going to have lots of fun making rose buds!

I will try the rose star pattern again with a larger hexagon, but for now I am content with these cuties.

You may notice that I don't sew with the thread on top like the tutorial.  I learned to sew on the back, not go through the paper, and then I just leave the thread alone when I take the paper out.

little quilt monday~~~doll quilt

Little Quilt Monday

When my daughter was a little girl, I started collecting antique quilts, but I didn't start making them until she was in elementary school.  Although this doll quilt isn't necessarily an antique, it is old and looks the part.  She played with her dolls and used this quilt, along with other doll quilts that I will show you another time.

 It is a cute nine patch design, using the bubblegum pinks, indigo blue, and shirting fabrics.  It has been tea dyed to make it look vintage : )

The little appliquéd hearts scattered about make it especially cute.  The only quilting is heart shapes randomly sewn in the squares.  I think this would be a fun little doll quilt to make.  It would be darling using solid fabrics!  It measures 16 X 21 inches.

finished baby quilt

Woo Woo!  My first finish for the year is done.  I am so happy and now all I need to do is add a label and it will be ready to give as a gift for the baby shower on Sunday : )

I machine quilted straight lines and then I big stitched with the pink crochet thread.  I could have added more hand stitching, and use the other colors that I blogged about here, but I think it is pretty cute with just the pink.

It has been washed, so it has a crinkly, soft, cozy look that is perfect for a baby quilt.  I used pink binding and I didn't take a picture of the back, but it is the little flower fabric that I also used in squares on the front of the quilt.  I am happy with fabric that I found in my stash to make this little quilt.

What a good feeling to already have a finish in 2012!

Little Quilt Monday

This week I am making a baby quilt for a shower next week.  The sweet couple is expecting a baby girl and I  hope to finish the quilting by next week-end.

The baby room colors are raspberry, brown, and cream.  I thought the green looked great with those colors too.  I am sure she already has the room decorated the way she wants, so this is a quilt to use, and  enjoy : )

It measures 42 X 54 inches.  I plan to hand stitch using cream, pink, and olive green crochet thread.

I think I will just use straight line quilting but I haven't decided for sure.  Any suggestions would be appreciated.

2005 graduation quilt

While spending time with my family in Colorado, I noticed my daughter had her graduation quilt and I thought I'd show it on my blog.  It was a very sunny day, and the pictures are really bright, but so is the quilt.

This is my original pattern.  I have used it to make several other quilts throughout the years, including graduation quilts, so I always refer to the pattern as the Graduation Quilt : )   I plan to make another quilt with this pattern soon, so I will take pictures of the process, keep track of the fabric used, and do my best to make a tutorial.  Maybe I will have a better name for the pattern by then.

It always makes me happy to see my quilts being used!

My labels are always pretty simple.  I think I need to start doing a little embroidery on them....so that will be my goal for my next finished quilt : )

vintage fabric

I have some vintage fabric yardage that I found in an antique store in Colorado that has been sitting in my stash for a while.  In the spirit of finishing a WIP, or as some might say a PIP(project in progress), I decided to use this fabric while I was here at the cabin.  It is a simple finish, but a finish is a finish : )

I cut the fabric in half and evened up the edges.  Then I ironed the sides over 1/2 inch and then ironed again 1/2 inch to give a neat edge.  All that was left to do was top stitch the sides that I had ironed, and now I have two cute vintage tea towels.   Do you call them tea towels or dish towels?

It feels good to finish some things that have been patiently waiting for my attention.  

I wonder what else I will find?

The reason I started this link-up party is to provide inspiration for me and my blog readers.  I have found that making a mini quilt is a great way to try new techniques or patterns,  practice machine or hand quilting, or experiment with different color combinations.  I am enjoying this process and I will try to have something new to show you each Monday.
  

This week I am going to finish a UFO(unfinished object : )  It is in the WIP stage, because I am still enjoying my family time in Colorado, but I hope to finish this mini quilt this week.  While here at our Colorado cabin,  I have found these 1 1/2 inch yo-yos that I made at least 10 years ago.(obvious by the homespun plaids!)

There are 100 yo-yos.

I started with  3 1/4 inch circles to make the 1 1/2 inch yo-yos.

I am sewing them together with black embroidery floss.  The finished mini quilt will be 10 X 10.                                        

The original plan for this UFO was to make more green yo-yos and place them in a tree shape using the black for the trunk and the red as the background.   Now I plan to make the layout above, giving a more modern look to the homespun fabrics.
